In my book reviews, I hate to write something that is closer to a book report, that I see so many other reviewers do. I feel that the author is the best one to describe the characters and storyline. So this review might be short, as I don’t want to give any spoilers.
My first reaction, I loved Wreckage. It is definitely a page turner, I couldn’t read fast enough, I wanted to find out everything that happened on that island. It is full of surprises and twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Especially the ending, it was a pleasant surprise for me.
Lillian Linden is a wife and mother who gets a well deserved vacation when she accompanies her mother-in-law on a vacation to Fiji that was won in a contest sponsored by a yogurt company. Dave Hall is a married man, corporate manager who is required to go along on the vacation as a representative of the yogurt company. Lillian Linden and Dave Hall have woven together some secrets and lies that they are finding difficult to keep. They are survivors and the book is a story of their ordeal, and the after effects of their lives being a focus of media attention. Genevieve Randall is a journalist who has been digging into their story, and wants to find out their secrets, even if she has to make them up herself. Luckily, Lillians husband is a lawyer who isn’t afraid of Genevieve, and we come to find out he has also been keeping secrets. This book isn’t just about Lillian and Dave surviving on an island, but also surviving when they get back to what was a normal life before – but can they feel normal again? How can you separate from someone that you got so close to when you spent every minute of every day together, just trying to survive?
Each day on the island, wasn’t filled with despair and hopelessness. It wasn’t filled with a longing to get off the island. Lillian and Dave chose to celebrate each day, and to enjoy their journey.
Wreckage is the first book by Emily Bleeker, and I am pleased to have come across it, and look forward to her next book LETTERS (working title) which is due out in March of 2016. It’s a story about a man who has lost his spouse to cancer, and then starts to receive letters from her after her death. They were letters she wrote before her death. Emily Bleeker’s blog talks about being a mom, wife and former educator, and cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma which is a rare form of cancer. I’m sure that some of her survival instincts and insights helped her to create the character of Lillian in her debut book Wreckage.
Wreckage is a great book for a Book Club reading, and I will suggest it at my next book club meeting. You can find the Wreckage Discussion Questions from Emily Bleekers website by clicking here.
